I often find that amongst patients, friends and family, there is a lot of confusion between what is and what is not insomnia. If you suffer from Insomnia you will know that getting a good night's sleep is more than simply getting to sleep, it is as much about a sustained period of deep sleep per night. I often find that many people try and 'work around' or minimise the seriousness of not being able to get a full night of sleep. We all know however that chronic tiredness can, in a very real sense ruin lives.
The list of what can potentially cause Insomnia is endless. I normally explore the following with you:
We all have busy lifestyles, and differing needs, some of us are morning people and others are night owls. Studies have shown however that you should aim to achieve 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Often if you get this much, it can help improve various lifestyle conditions. Not getting this much might be negatively affecting your health in ways that you might not be aware of.
If you are consistently finding it hard to get to sleep or maintain sleep over a number of weeks, months or even years, then I am sure I will be able to help.
In the same way that Insomnia has many causes, it stands to reason that the cure to your insomnia will be personal to you. My role initially is to spend time getting to know you and your lifestyle and then to support you in changes that we choose to make together. What follows is an idea of some intervention I might suggest to you if relevant.
As you can see my job is to find a solution that works for you, and the day that you email me in the morning feeling a million dollars after a good night sleep is going to be a day that I know we have been successful together.
